An electric heat pump can heat your home during the winter and cool it during the summer. The key components of a heat pump include:

1. Compressor: This increases the pressure of the refrigerant so that it will accept the maximum amount of heat from the air.

2. Condenser: Coils that move heat to or from the outside air.

3. Evaporator: Coils that move heat to or from the air inside the home.

4. Air handler: Fan that blows the air into the ducts of the home. Components 1, 2, 3 and 4 are found in all standard air conditioners.

5. Reversing valve: Changes the heat pump from air conditioning to heating, and vice versa. This is not part of the thermostat.

ANATOMY OF A HEAT PUMP

An air-to-water system distributes heat via your wet central heating system. Heat pumps work much more efficiently at a lower temperature than a standard boiler system would. So they are more suitable for under floor heating systems or larger radiators, which give out heat at lower temperatures over longer periods of time.

Heat from the air is absorbed into a fluid which is pumped through a heat exchanger in the heat pump. Low grade heat is then extracted by the refrigeration system and, after passing through the heat pump compressor, is concentrated into a higher-temperature, useable heat capable of heating water for the heating and hot water circuits of the house.

They can heat, cool, clean and control the humidity of the air to create optimum comfort conditions for both the occupants and equipment within the space.

Heat pumps are an integral part of air conditioning technology. Heat pumps transfer heat from one environment to another via refrigerant. In cooling mode, heat pumps transfer the heat in an enclosed area (room, industrial process) to the outside air, resulting in a cooling of the area in question. This is the role that heat pumps play in common refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
